Myopia Management

What is Myopia?

Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is a condition in which individuals can see nearby objects clearly but have difficulty seeing objects at a distance—such as road signs or leaves on a tree. People with myopia often squint to bring distant objects into sharper focus.

Currently, there is no cure for myopia. Research shows that as myopia progresses, the risk of developing serious eye conditions also increases. This has led eye care professionals to focus on slowing its progression, especially in children and young adults, as the eyes change most rapidly during these years. Early and effective management can make a significant difference in long-term eye health.

Myopia management involves various strategies and treatments designed to slow the progression of nearsightedness. These approaches aim to control the growth of the eyeball and promote better long-term visual outcomes. Managing myopia effectively can help preserve your child’s vision and reduce the likelihood of developing more severe eye problems later in life.

Types of Myopia Control

Several treatments have been shown to slow the progression of myopia effectively. To determine which option is best for you or your child, consult with your eye doctor for a personalized recommendation.

  • Ortho-K / CRT (Orthokeratology)
Ortho-K involves the use of specially designed rigid gas-permeable contact lenses worn overnight. These lenses gently reshape the cornea while you sleep, allowing clear vision throughout the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses. This non-surgical approach is particularly popular among athletes and active individuals.
  • Low-Dose Atropine Eye Drops
One contributing factor to myopia progression is thought to be eye strain. Low-dose atropine eye drops help relax the eye muscles and reduce this strain, slowing the elongation of the eyeball. Similar to the drops used for eye dilation during an exam, atropine keeps the pupils slightly dilated throughout the day. This treatment is an excellent option for children who are not ready for contact lenses or prefer a non-invasive solution.
  • MiSight® 1 Day Contact Lenses
MiSight® 1 day contact lenses are the first and only FDA-approved soft contact lenses proven to slow myopia progression in children. These daily disposable lenses are worn during the day for 10 or more hours and discarded in the evening, offering a convenient and effective option for age-appropriate children.
  • Stellest® Myopia Control Eyeglasses
Essilor® Stellest® spectacle lenses correct vision while simultaneously slowing myopia progression. Clinical studies show that these lenses slowed myopia progression by an average of 71% over two years—making them one of the most effective spectacle-based options for children with myopia.
  • Multifocal Eyeglasses and Contact Lenses
Multifocal lenses are designed to reduce eye strain by offering multiple focal zones for different viewing distances. Studies have shown that children wearing multifocal lenses experienced significantly slower myopia progression over three years compared to those wearing standard single-vision lenses.
